RUNE
The RUNE project has the title (Reducing Uncertainty of Near-shore wind resource Estimates using onshore lidars). The overall project aim is to quantify the uncertainty of near-shore wind resources from mesoscale model simulations using land-based wind scanning lidar technology.
The methodology is to perform first a campaign to identify the most cost-effective lidar scanning methodology to observe winds in the horizontal range of 5 to 10 km and quantify the measurement uncertainty. It will be done at a land site with high-quality meteorological mast data for verification. The second campaign will include two long-range scanning lidars observing over the sea from the coastline and one lidar wind vertical profiler. In addition, a floating wind profiling lidar is expected at sea.
RUNE will determine the error, i.e. level of uncertainties, in near-shore wind resource estimates from mesoscale model simulations. RUNE will describe how to enhance mesoscale model simulations by calibrating the model with the lidar and satellite observations.
Further, RUNE will simultaneously perform wave measurements to establish a unique wind-wave dataset, which will be used to improve the understanding of the wind-wave interaction, key for design optimization of offshore wind farms.
